The Vice President
Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi born January 19th 1943 to Mr. Alex Kiwanuka and Mrs. Virgo Kiwanuka of Bulegeya is the 13th Vice President of the Republic of Uganda. Edward Ssekandi, an old boy of St. Mary’s College Kisubi holds a bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of East Africa in Dar es Salaam. He is also a diploma holder of legal practice from the Law Development Centre, Kampala.
In 1969, Ssekandi was appointed State Attorney of Government of Uganda a position he held until 1973, when he started lecturing at Law Development Centre in Kampala and later becoming a Principal Lecturer and Head of Department of Law of Makerere University. Earlier in 1970, he had been enrolled as an advocate of The High Court of Uganda.
In 1974, he was promoted to Head of Post Graduate Bar Course until 1978, when he became the Acting Director at the Law Development Centre. A year later he went into private practice with the establishment of his law firm - Ssekandi and Company Advocates.
Before joining active politics, from the period of 1982 to 1985 he was the Chancellor Namirembe Diocese. From 1986 – 1993, he was Lead Counsel for the Commission of Inquiry into Violations of Human Rights in Uganda for the period between January1962 – January1988. Earlier in 1986 -1992, Ssekandi was elected as the Vice Chairman of the Law Council Disciplinary Committee.
In 1994 he was elected as a delegate, representing Bukoto central in the Uganda Constituency Assembly, which deliberated the 1995 Uganda Constitution.
Edward Ssekandi in 1996 contested for the Bukoto central seat which he won thus becoming a member of parliament. In the same year he became the Chairperson of Rules, Privileges and Disciplinary Committee in parliament. He was then later appointed the Chairperson of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee until 1998.
After two years in Parliament; Edward Ssekandi in September 1998 he was elected Deputy Speaker of the 6th Parliament a position he held until July 2000. On winning the Bukoto seat again in July 2000, he was voted as the Speaker of the 7th Parliament of Uganda until 2006.
In 2006, Ssekandi was re-elected Member of Parliament on NRM ticket and later also re-elected Speaker of the 8th Parliament a position he held for five years till 2010. During that time as speaker of the parliament of Uganda, he was also elected Chairperson of African Parliamentary Union (APU) and also President of the PUIC/OIC Union of Parliaments of Islamic Countries until 2011.
In May 2011 Edward Ssekandi was appointed Uganda’s 9th Vice President succeeding Hon Gilbert Bukenya. He was replaced as Speaker by Rebecca Kadaga. Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, a father of four, is married to Margret Ssekandi.
